Longer wavelengths are used when the level of penetration that needs to be achieved is deeper. In such a case, the wavelengths may range from 780 to 950 nanometers.

A hand-held laser device is usually used to administer this procedure. The patient can feel the device touch their body when it is being applied. It is only the touch of the device that one feels for the entire process. The process is entirely painless and noninvasive. The patient will not feel vibrations, heat, or sounds as there is none produced.

But, there is a possibility of feeling a sensation of warmth around the part being treated when lasers of longer wavelengths are used in achieving deep-tissue penetration. The source of this warmth is the laser. Treatments are limited to a few minutes in order to avoid the possibility of damaging body cells around the area being treated. Typical sessions last 1 to 2 minutes at most.
