Practical jokes or commonly known as pranks are mischievous tricks played on someone, usually to let the victim experience discomfort, confusion, perplexity or embarrassment. These differ from hoaxes or confidence tricks because victims are told about the joke after rather than tricking them to hand over valuables like money. They are normally lighthearted and have no lasting impact.

Their aim is in making their target feel foolish and humbled but not humiliated and victimized by using gestures with affection and humor to encourage laughter. Samples of these are the Arnold prank calls which the caller use some sound clips acquired from movies of that actor into fooling the other person to think the one calling them is the celebrity. They use for this digital applications where they only choose recorded sentences in talking like them.

These were originally done by imitating voices of famous people while having these telephone calls that is easier since callers remain anonymous. Doing this became harder though because newer technology has been developed that lets you identify who is calling. These are caller IDs which could let individuals see names of the person calling them.

Pranksters also could use payphones because the receiving device cannot display their numbers but most people prefer not answering calls with no caller IDs shown. These are less common now since the payphones are fewer due to them getting phased out slowly. Their goal in remaining anonymous has become harder with these situations.

An alternative is increasingly becoming popular which is utilizing some VoIP services that telephone numbers would not simply exist. Tracing calls from these are very difficult since they can pass through different servers and routers being operated by various entities from several countries. Though law enforcement agencies could trace them but the required effort, time and resources for the ordinary prank is too great.

With more people using the internet, the popularity of prank calls has increased again where some online radio stations are dedicated to this. They broadcast various submissions from the community and features them on their channel. There are software allowing them to privately share their pranks live to fellow users.

Sharing personally made pranks calls is possible through the internet and this allows them to develop a community. They could share these things live or those they previously recorded and some systems lets listeners chat while pranksters are calling their victims. This lets them discuss and give the caller suggestions on what they say.

Be careful though when you plan to do this yourself because laws are there against the abuse of this joke that is considered a crime. You could not call emergency services then pretend someone needs help immediately or just talk to them random things. Calling with intent of threatening, abusing or harassing someone is a crime too.

Another prank commonly done and considered a criminal act is when law enforcement agencies are contacted to report threats like explosives. This can cause inconvenience due to the area being searched or possibility of cancellation for the event there. They will trace your call and arrest you.
