Substance abuse has ripped off the community young men and women who had a lot of potential in their life. Doing this will help save the future generation and ensure that moral decadence has been eliminated from the community. There are many ways in which we can combat this vice.

Individual counseling is one of the way therapists and counselors use to deal with substance abuse. It not only deals with combating illegal drug use but also deals with other factors that will help improve the life of the abuser after therapy is complete. These factors include employment status, quitting illegal doings, and rebuilding family relationships. The abuser is counseled and taught ways to ensure that he or she maintains restraint. The therapist has a twelve step program, the addict should make regular visits to the center and the therapist can make necessary recommendations.

Group counseling is another method of treating substance abuse. Most centers use this method to encourage social support among the addicts present. They share their experiences about how they started and what they underwent prior to looking for help. These discussions help to encourage a lifestyle that without drugs. It is a community friendly method that brings togetherness among peers. The addicts are there to support each other.

There are outpatient programs for those who have busy rosters. They are scheduled to meet at least twice a week with the therapists. At the facility, they are offered drug education and ways to handle their cravings once away from the facility. They can be highly successful if one is serious about it. The counsellor can offer good advice on hobbies to take up to avoid bad habits.

The short-term residential program is based on the twelve step approach. It was designed to dwell on alcohol-related issues but later it was used to treat other types of substance use like cocaine. A patient stays in the hospital for three to six weeks and it is necessary to make regular follow ups once you leave the facility. Aftercare programs are important to avoid relapse.

A non-hospital based program that takes a long time is called long-term residential treatment. It provides daily care for addict at all times. It is expensive because it takes up more time. It helps the patient to reintegrate into to the community as well as help develop social skills. It takes a period of between six months to a year before the abuser is released.

Arresting illegal drug users and placing them in a cell is also a way used to curb hard narcotics. Once in jail the users are treated under pressure and shown ways to earn a living away from drugs. Once released the probability of relapse is low due to the fear of authority.

There is also medication for addictions such as heroin addiction, one is given methadone to help deal with the craving and withdrawal. This method is combined with constant behavioral therapies to curb substance misuse. Alcohol, opioids, cocaine among others are drugs that medication is recommended for.
