Discovering Feminist Workshops, Camps And Related Events

By Donna Kennedy

When it comes to feminism, some consider it a theory, others a practice. When it comes feminist workshops, it is often feminist practitioners whom lead and attend these events. Whether held at a conference, convention, festival or rally, there are often a number of different topics covered in multiple workshops over the course of a day, a weekend, or a week. In other cases, there can be annual events, such as those related to feminist theory which are held at a number of different colleges and universities.

In some cases, these events host opening plenaries, discussion forums and panels. For the most part, all workshops deal with issues important to women. Whereas, there can also be others directed at teaching all genders and orientations with regards to equality. Whether that equality be in relation to civil rights, equal pay for equal work, sexual harassment, gender reassignment or sexual orientation often depends on what company or organization is organizing and presenting the event.

Recently, individuals and companies have been providing these workshops either on-site or at a conference center. Two companies offering these workshops are Soapbox and Ambivalently Yours, both of which are woman owned and operated. As such, the focus of workshops provided tend to lean toward feminism and feminist theory.

Beyond workshops, there are also other events such as weekend camps which allow women an opportunity learn about feminist issues. In addition, as these events are often more relaxed, women also tend to learn more about oneself and other women while in attendance. As with most events of this nature, there are often a number of different learning opportunities.

Women should note that these camping events are nothing like conferences, conventions, festivals or retreats. For, unlike others, these events often offer an overview of history and past work of a number of feminists. As this is the case, many whom attend these events often discover talents and interests in working on feminist agendas. In fact, when these events are held on an annual basis, there are many women whom will create and join a number of different affinity camps and groups.

In addition to learning about the history and work of others, the camp also provides the opportunity for all in attendance to examine and get to know oneself better. In the process, many have not only gained insight into the personal and political view one holds but have also discovered new talents and interests. As these events are open to all women, regardless of lifestyle, political party, race, religion, sexual orientation or political persuasion, it is important those planning to attend have an open mind, for while political discussions often become heated, emotional abuse and violence are never appropriate, and will not be tolerated, regardless of differences in these areas.

In most cases, those attending camps will hear talks by a popular, well known and respected woman offering a keynote address. While this is also the case at a number of conferences, conventions, festivals and rallies, those at camps are often more laid back. As such, individuals often share stories with one another afterward over a campfire or take walks and talk about issues under a starry sky.

Women sharing the same type of interests often make fast friends at these events. In many cases, these individuals will at some point work together to overcome challenges and obstacles important to women. When this is the case, there is a very good chance the friendships made at these events might very well last a lifetime.
